How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Interventional radiology procedures use sedation to help patients relax. Because you may receive sedation, you will need to have a responsible adult stay with you for the duration of your procedure. The adult accompanying you will also be responsible for your discharge instructions and your transportation home.

Unless otherwise instructed by your physician, we ask that you increase your water intake the day before your exam to ensure you are hydrated. However, for your safety, do not consume any food or liquid after midnight.

On the day of your procedure, please bring a list of current medications you take on a daily basis, including those that have been ordered by a physician and over-the-counter medications or vitamins. This list should include the name of the medication, the strength and how often you take it. If your ordering physician has ordered general anesthesia for your procedure, a Day Surgery Unit team member will call you with specific instructions within 24 to 48 hours prior to your procedure.

Please notify us in advance if you take blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin® (warfarin), Eliquis® (apixaban), Plavix® (clopidogrel), aspirin, Lovenox®, Persantine,® etc. Anticoagulants (blood thinners) must be stopped prior to most invasive procedures. If you are on Glucophage® (metformin), you may be instructed to stop taking it a certain number of days before and after the procedure. If you take insulin, do not take any while you are fasting. Please check your blood sugar the morning of your procedure. Take your other prescribed medications as ordered, including blood pressure medications, with sips of water the morning of your procedure. This also includes any ordered pre-procedure medications. After your procedure, you will be assessed and monitored in one of our recovery units. Once discharge criteria are met, post-procedure instructions will be given and you will be discharged.
